COASTAL ORANGE COUNTY · PANELS & SERVICE UPGRADES

Plan the capacity behind your next upgrade.

An EV charger, new equipment, a remodel, or a panel replacement can change what your electrical system needs to support. Start with the existing installation and the loads you intend to add.

DECISIONS THAT SHAPE THE WORK

Look beyond the empty breaker spaces.

Available positions alone do not settle capacity or equipment compatibility. Review the present installation and proposed loads before choosing the upgrade.

01

Current and future loads

List the appliances, heating and cooling equipment, charging, and other electrical loads in use or planned. Include later phases you already know about. That information supports an assessment of the existing service and the capacity the project actually needs.

02

Equipment and location

Review the existing panel, service equipment, installation condition, and space available for access. A replacement or added subpanel may involve different routing and coordination. Confirm the proposed equipment and placement before ordering or starting associated finish work.

03

Scheduling and coordination

Service work can involve utility coordination, permits, inspections, and an interruption to power. Identify those dependencies for the particular property and confirm responsibilities and timing. Discuss essential equipment or occupancy constraints before scheduling the work.

BEFORE WE TALK

Start with the equipment list.

  • Project city, property type, and reason for the proposed upgrade.
  • Photos of accessible exterior panel labels, if already available; do not remove covers.
  • Known loads being added, with equipment information when available.
  • Construction dates and constraints around power interruptions.

DEFINE THE HANDOFF

An understandable electrical layout.

Discuss circuit labeling, the equipment included, inspection closeout where applicable, and the documents to retain. If capacity is being reserved for future equipment, confirm what is included now and what remains for that later installation.

Panels & service upgrades: planning questions

Does adding an EV charger automatically mean replacing the panel?

That cannot be decided from the charger alone. Existing loads, available capacity, the charging plan, and the installation condition all matter. Review those together before settling on a panel or service upgrade.

Is a subpanel the same as a larger electrical service?

A subpanel distributes circuits from an existing supply. Increasing the service is a different scope. The correct approach depends on the loads and installation, so identify what the new equipment must support before choosing between them.

How long will power be unavailable?

The outage plan depends on the agreed work and utility or inspection coordination. Ask for the proposed sequence and interruption window during project planning; a fixed duration cannot be promised before the scope is known.
